Organic Grid Print (Navy)
Notes from the designer: Each textile is individually handcrafted, resulting in unique, one-of-a-kind pieces where no two are exactly alike. We welcome you to share your personal preferences so we can tailor the creation to your specific vision.
Description: This wool material would be suitable for a jacket.
Textile/Material: A smooth wool material with thicker strips of flax stiffening the fabric. The gridded organic lines can be felt in the form of stiff white tufts on the front of the fabric and smooth pierced hairs on the back of the fabric.
Impact on Planet/People/Animals: The navy wool base fabric was a deadstock leftover material sourced from the University of the Arts London. Flax is a more sustainable fiber alternative and could be combined with wool to reach a certain quality. It is grown quickly and easily, requires very few chemicals, and does not require irrigation during its cultivation.
Construction:
- Composition: 90% WO, 10% LI
- Raw Materials: Wool, Flax
- Coloration: Piece dyed, Undyed
- Sourcing: UAL and Meaningful Crafts
- Weave: Weave + Non Woven
Circularity: The flax fiber can be removed from the sample and re-felted. A way the wool fabric can be recycled is by shredding the fabric into small pieces and breaking it down into fibers. It can then be carded which aligns the fibers and makes them ready to be felted again. Adding virgin wool fibers can improve its quality.
Recipe: Thick chunks of flax fiber were laid out in organic lines on the inside of the wool fabric. Using the industrial needle punching machine at studio Boldwool, the material was passed three times through the machine. I ensured to keep the flax side facing up towards the needles so that they would punch the fibers downwards through the wool base. The result is a gridded print with stiffer tufts poking through to form the print.
